  • A very open and welcoming community, theological questions and discussion are encouraged.

  • As long time church members relocated to Asheville, we were anxious to find a new church home as soon as possible. We first visited some of the larger churches in our Presbyterian tradition but they were not convenient to south Asheville, where we live. That lead us to the New Hope Church on Sweeten Creek Road.

We were simply stunned at the way we were received, from the very first Sunday! I have visited a lot of churches in my time, Presbyterian and not, and I have never been so warmly welcomed as we were at NHPC. Perhaps it is the relatively small size (just 125 members), a church where you can know almost everyone quickly. Or maybe it is the PCUSA tradition, a denomination that has long included women in both leadership and ministry and in recent years has made a special effort to welcome everyone, including LGBT families and friends. In any case, the worship service is simple, informal and intimate. (And includes a beautiful mountain view from the sanctuary window!) New Hope is not a church without traditions but we found them to be reassuring rather than oppressive. The "transitional pastor" (the church is seeking a replacement for a retired pastor) is a special treat. Her sermons are smart, meaningful, instructive and inclusive. They are only enhanced by her informality and personal warmth.

There are many opportunities for service and learning at New Hope and new ideas are really valued. If you are looking for a faith community where you don't have to check your brain at the door, where you are free to be you and where you will have opportunities to understand and grow closer to God in a supportive community, this church could be a good choice. And the beauty is you can actually get comfortable quickly, without any pressure. When is the last time you found that at church?
